Units and definitions
Decimal hour (h, base-10): The hour expressed as a decimal value where minutes are converted by minutes ÷ 60. Example: 1 h 30 min = 1.5 h; 15 min = 0.25 h. Decimal hours are common in payroll and aviation logs. System: derived from hour (non-SI unit accepted for use alongside SI).
Hour (h, hr): Unit of time equal to 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds. Exact relation: 1 h = 60 min = 3,600 s. In SI terms, 1 h = 3,600 × the SI base unit second (s). System: non-SI, accepted for use with SI and used internationally (not specific to imperial/US only).
Minute (min): Unit of time equal to 60 seconds and 1/60 of an hour. Exact relation: 1 min = 60 s = 1/60 h ≈ 0.016 666 7 h. In SI terms, 1 min = 60 s (second is the SI base unit). System: non-SI, accepted for use with SI and used internationally.
Second (s): SI base unit of time. Exact relation: 1 s = 1/60 min = 1/3,600 h. For reference: 0.1 h = 6 min = 360 s; 0.01 h = 0.6 min = 36 s. System: SI base unit.
Conversion formula
Decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
Source: hour and minute are defined with exact relations 1 h = 60 min and 1 min = 60 s in the NIST Guide to the SI, Chapter 5: Units Outside the SI — NIST Special Publication 811, Chapter 5.
