How to Play Gomoku

Gomoku is played on a grid with black and white stones. Players take turns placing one stone on an empty space. The goal is to make a continuous line of five stones before the other side does.

A winning line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. In this online version, the board has 15 rows and 15 columns. The coordinates around the board help you track moves and discuss positions.

Gomoku Rules

This game uses casual Gomoku rules. Five or more connected stones win the game. There are no Renju forbidden-move rules, so the game stays simple and easy to play.

Each turn, place one stone on an empty space. You cannot move or remove stones after they are placed, except by using the undo button. The game ends when one side connects five stones or when the board is full.

Game Modes

Two players: Two people play on the same device. The starting side is randomized when you press New Game.

AI Normal: A lighter computer opponent. It can attack and block basic threats, but it may miss deeper tactics.

AI Hard: A stronger opponent that plays more defensively and looks for better attacking moves.

AI Impossible: The strongest mode. It uses tactical search, blocks serious threats, and makes no random mistakes.

Strategy Tips

  • Control the center early. Stones near the center can build threats in more directions than stones placed near the edge.
  • Create open lines. A line that can grow from both ends is much stronger than a blocked line. Open threes and open fours are especially dangerous.
  • Block open fours immediately. If your opponent has four stones in a row with open space, they may win on the next move.
  • Look for double threats. A double threat creates two possible winning lines at the same time. If your opponent can only block one of them, you win on the next turn.
  • Do not only chase your own attack. Strong Gomoku play is a balance between building your lines and stopping your opponent’s strongest line.
