Citizenship test FAQ

Why does this test use the 2008 set?

USCIS replaced the 2020 redesign and reverted to the 2008 test in 2021; a later trial redesign ended in 2024 with no change, so 2008 remains in effect.

Is the civics test multiple choice?

No. It is an oral interview. This widget uses choices only for practice efficiency.

How many questions do I study and how many will I be asked?

Study the published list of 100; you will be asked up to 10 and the interview can stop after 6 correct.

Do answers about officials change?

Yes. Items that name officeholders (for example, your U.S. Representative) change with elections or appointments.

What happens if I fail the civics or English test?

You get one retest on the failed part only, scheduled 60–90 days after the first interview.

Are there English-language exemptions?

Yes. 50/20 and 55/15 applicants are exempt from the English test but must take civics; they may use an interpreter.

What is the 65/20 special consideration?

Applicants age 65+ with 20+ years as LPR study a simplified list of 20 civics questions; they are still asked up to 10 and need 6 correct.

Can I take the civics test in my language?

Only if you qualify for the English exemption or a medical disability accommodation; bring a fluent interpreter when required.

What materials are official?

USCIS publishes the 100 questions and answers with audio; use the current USCIS list for study.

Is the civics test the only part of the naturalization exam?

No. There is also an English speaking, reading, and writing assessment during the interview.

Does the interview include local or state questions?

Yes. Some items ask for your state’s Governor, your U.S. Senators, and your U.S. Representative.

Do I need to memorize exact dates like tax deadlines or numbers of officials?

No. The civics test focuses on government structure, history, rights, and current officeholders, not shifting deadlines.

Does USCIS decide immediately?

USCIS aims to issue a decision after the interview and testing; by policy they have up to 120 days to decide.

Where do I find the latest list and practice tools?

On USCIS’s site: the 2008 civics questions page and the official practice test.
