How the counter works

The tool calculates stats directly from the text in the box. It does not change your content. Counts update live on every input, and you can also refresh them with one click. Here’s the breakdown of all the buttons and actions:

Update stats

Refreshes all statistics based on the current text. Stats also update automatically while typing or pasting, but this button is useful after large edits or if you want a manual update.

Copy text

Copies the entire text box content to your clipboard. If the browser clipboard API is blocked or unavailable, the tool uses a fallback copy method.

Download .txt

Downloads your text as a plain .txt file using UTF-8 encoding. The file includes the same line breaks and spacing you see in the box.

Clear

Clears the text box and resets all stats to zero.

Characters

Counts every character exactly as it appears, including letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, spaces, and line breaks. This is the total text length.

Characters (no spaces)

Counts characters after removing all whitespace. Whitespace includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. This gives you a “no whitespace” character count.

Words

Counts word-like sequences made of letters or digits. Punctuation and symbols are not counted as words. Words with an internal apostrophe are counted as one word (for example, don’t).

Sentences

Counts sentence-like segments that end with ., !, or ?. This is a best-effort count designed for typical text.

Lines

Counts lines based on line breaks. Each newline creates a new line, including empty lines. If the text box is empty, the line count is zero.

Paragraphs

Counts non-empty text blocks separated by one or more blank lines. Multiple blank lines are treated as one separator.

Letters

Counts letters (A–Z and a–z) found in the text.

Digits

Counts digits (0–9) found in the text.

Punctuation & symbols

Counts characters that are not letters, digits, or whitespace. This includes punctuation and many symbols.

Whitespace (total)

Counts all whitespace characters, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

Spaces

Counts space characters only. Tabs and newlines are excluded.

Tabs

Counts tab characters.

Newlines

Counts line break occurrences. Both Windows (CRLF) and Unix (LF) line breaks are handled.

Longest word length

Finds the length of the longest detected word using the same word rules as the word counter.

Average word length

Calculates the average length of detected words. It is the sum of word lengths divided by the number of words.

Average chars per word (no spaces)

Calculates characters without whitespace divided by the word count. This is a quick way to estimate typical word size.

Average words per sentence

Calculates word count divided by the sentence count. If no sentences are detected, the value is shown as 0.
